Virtual Private Network – VPN

What is it and when do I need one?

What is a VPN?

VPN is a Virtual Private Network that makes your internet connection more secure by providing a private connection between you and the websites you visit.

When you use a VPN service, they provide temporary IP addresses for you to choose from that will hide your true IP address from every website or email you connect with.

When do you need one?

When you are using public or unsecured networks such as wifi in coffee shops, libraries, airports, hotels etc.

How do I know which VPN service to use?

There are many VPN services available and it can be overwhelming to choose which one is best for you. There are several good sites that have done the research and made recommendations on their top picks. Cnet.com, Comparitech.com and Techradar.com rated Express VPN in their top 3 providers for 2024. If you are considering using a free VPN service be extra diligent in your research as some contain invasive advertising or in some cases, sell data to third-parties.

We use Express VPN and love it!

Follow these easy steps to sign up, install and use Express VPN

To Use Express VPN

 Step 1

Click on the app to open it

Step 2

Click on the location bar to select a location you want to use.

Step 3

Once you tap the location bar, you will get a new screen with two menus on the top of the page – Recommended or All Locations. You can choose any location you like.

Note: If you want to access Netflix you will need to use a Canadian location.

If you are accessing your bank or other secure sites, the IP address may alert the site to unusual activity. You may be required to do additional security steps. (I always try to select the same IP address when accessing these accounts so it will recognise me when I return using the VPN)

Step 4

Once you select your location, Express VPN will automatically connect you. You will see the On Button at the top of the screen turn from Red (should say – Not Connected) to Green (will change to -Connected)
