Duolingo
It is always great to know a little bit of the language before you get to a country. Just before I was heading off to Costa Rica I decided to try out the app and learn to speak Spanish. Although I didn’t even get half way through the course before I left, I found that I was able to read a lot of signs and communicate enough to manage my way in very simple situations.
Duo Lingo is a fun interactive app that let’s you learn a language from 5-20 minutes per day. It has approximately 40 languages that you can learn and is completely free! Just install it on your computer or phone, and you are all ready to go! In addition to learning to read and write, Duolingo utilizes your microphone and speakers to teach you how to speak and understand the language when they’re spoken. There are many other language apps that you can download but this is the one that I recommend as it is (so far) my favorite. You achieve levels and badges and can challenge your family and friends to learn while you learn making it a lot of fun.
Will you be fluent in any language you want to learn? If you have a memory like me, most likely not; however, it is a fun way to be introduced to any language and will help you with the basics.
If you find Duolingo is not for you and are interested in searching for another language app…. type in “Languages” in the search bar and a list of apps will come up.

To start with it will ask you about 10 questions. Once you are through you will see the lessons and will be able to come in and out of the app as wanted. You can then add languages (if you want to learn more than one at a time)
